Woman of the sea

A contest aimed at young women who care about the environment and the challenges facing our Blue Planet.

A competition aimed at young women who care about the environment and the challenges that involve our Blue Planet.
Organized as part of the Decade of Marine Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, by B Women Italy and by the Donne di Mare association, the Woman of the Sea Award was created to propose an innovative vision of activities, including entrepreneurship, by women who, in compliance with rights and equal opportunities, protect the environment by enhancing territories and people.

The award supports ideas in various macro-areas of our society: research, art, cooking, entrepreneurship and education. The call involves and collects different categories of products and services, such as multimedia, graphic and photographic products, research projects, educational projects, to name a few examples.

Seven women, with seven different professional skills and careers, have put themselves on the line by dedicating their work to the sea. For this reason, they have been selected as spokespersons and role models for the Woman of the Sea Award, representing all seven of the expected outcomes of the Decade.

With this award we put at the center the fundamental role of women and the sea and the Woman-Sea relationship, to bring out the possibility of a new vision of Italian entrepreneurial activities, with a feminine, sustainable and lasting connotation that, like the sea, can be for and of everyone.

Francesca Santoro, IOC-UNESCO Programme Specialist

The presence of a plurality of female experiences and skills are the aspects that characterize the two promoting associations, while UNESCO has among its global priorities the promotion of gender equality, together with the achievement of the seven concrete results of the Decade of the Sea.

Objectives and themes

Focus on the woman-sea relationship to bring out the possibility of a new vision of Italian entrepreneurial activities, with a feminine, sustainable and lasting connotation that, like the sea, can be addressed to all citizens. The Woman of the Sea Award aims to create a new model of trans-sectoral and trans-territorial organization capable of addressing environmental and social challenges as essential elements to achieve sustainable development, carrying forward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations.

The project submitted must consider one of the following macro themes in its implementation:

The sea is (and) women
The fundamental role of women
The fundamental role of the sea
