The ocean is one, unique and large, and it belongs to the entire world: imagining and activating collective, inclusive and open solutions starting from Marine Sciences is the map we are following to move from the ocean we have to the one we want.
The ocean we have is already performing extraordinary feats: it generates more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe and has already absorbed up to 90% of the heat generated by humans and up to 30% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. However, all this anthropogenic disturbance – and in particular climate change – puts its state of health at risk. Reversing the decline and working for the ocean of tomorrow is the only possible solution for a sustainable future.
We have ten years and a promise: one wave at a time we will reach every coast in the world.
Every day, we create a virtuous circle around science to connect people to each other and to the ocean.
The Decade of the Sea works to create a network that connects citizens, scientists, businesses and institutions and our one great ocean. Within this network, each actor brings know-how and synergies to design concrete solutions capable of improving and strengthening the management and health of the ocean. To form this network, the Decade of the Sea informs, educates, creates culture, connections and opportunities. It welcomes people, projects and ideas. It encourages the sharing of knowledge. It identifies and realizes opportunities. It does and will do so all over the world. Every day. Every year. For ten years.
Commitment
Through calls for proposals, calls to action and concrete actions, the Decade of the Sea is committed to:
- Forming an Ocean Generation, a movement of citizens capable of making informed decisions and acting for an ocean that urgently needs to be saved.
- Supporting female empowerment, promoting the woman-sea duo.
- Supporting research by giving space to young researchers.
- Launching and supporting projects to restore biodiversity and marine ecosystems.
- Becoming the spokesperson of an Ocean Literacy – Ocean Education movement, aimed at educating people on the essential principles and fundamental concepts related to the ocean.
- Promoting informed decisions based on science.

What are the core values that guide us every day in building the ocean of tomorrow?
We believe in synergies and in the value of projects born from different minds, sensibilities and knowledge. We work for a future built by many hands, in the belief that the involvement of the community is needed to create positive movements.
We tell the ocean’s difficulties by proposing solutions and inviting action. Noticing a problem is the beginning, not the end of a journey: it is the first step towards a virtuous resolution. Learn, Think, Act is our motto.
We listen to ideas, suggestions and feedback and we work every day to improve ourselves. We are curious people, we have an open approach to the world (not only the marine one). We invite everyone to our table, without prejudices and stereotypes. Anyone can lend a hand.
Building a better future means starting from sincerity and transparency. For this reason, we choose to collaborate only with trusted entities and partners, who put the same care into their work as we do. We share and tell our choices so that they are always in the light of the sun.
We know the difficulties of realizing our visions and if a route leads nowhere we are always ready to inaugurate a new path. The sea is big. To land we know we can rethink the path.
