Save the Wave App Challenge

An IOC-UNESCO competition for schools to teach Coding and Ocean Education with the support of Axa Italia and Gamindo.

Save the Wave App Challenge is a challenge for high school students who will have the task of designing a video game on the theme of “Ocean Education” to raise awareness of the state of the sea.
Teachers and students are provided with the right tools to learn about the ocean and develop a web game that can help society better understand the sea, with the aim of creating a beneficial connection between school, the sea and local reality.

IOC-UNESCO, together with AXA Italia and Gamindo, has conceived and launched the Save the Wave App Challenge project, with the aim of introducing Ocean Education into schools and school curricula also thanks to coding and new technologies.

Among the first participating institutes are the ITC Nitti Napoli, the Alessandro Volta State Scientific High School of Turin and the Bartolomeo Zucchi State Classical High School of Monza, all with a different distance from the sea.

No matter how close the sea is to home, it is in the interest of the entire community to work towards a healthier ocean.

The challenge was included in the school-work alternation program and in the past few months it involved students in the creation of a video game that would increase awareness of the state of the planet’s waters. The itinerary included:

  • Student training on Ocean Education: eight lessons of one hour each.
  • Training on Coding and Gaming: four lessons of one hour each.
  • Student preparation for the challenge: four lessons of one hour each.
  • Challenge: design of the web game (10 hours), submit prototype and video presentation to the jury.

Ocean Savior – winner

The 5E class of the Francesco Saverio Nitti Institute in Naples is the winner of the “Save the Wave App Challenge” competition with the web game Ocean Savior.

The protagonist of the digital game “Ocean Savior” is the turtle Cleany, who has the task of removing as much waste as possible from the sea with her basket: the player must therefore help her to preserve marine fauna and flora, eliminating all harmful elements. However, you must be careful not to drop the waste on the seabed and not to catch the fish, otherwise you will lose one of the three lives available. To enrich the games, there are also many curiosities that allow players to learn more about the ocean and its inhabitants.

“The aim of the game is to denounce the pollution of the seas, caused in particular by plastic waste, and to encourage the player to remove these polluting products from the seabed, not only on screens but also in real life. We hope that ‘Ocean Savior’ can well illustrate the real degradation of our seas and incite young people to safeguard our marine habitats, the wealth of the Italian territory”

The team at Gamindo, an innovative startup specializing in the development of impact branded videogames, branded videogames for organizations and companies, has developed the social and environmental impact videogame designed by the kids, available and playable by everyone directly online.

“Save The Wave App Challenge is a ‘game designed by young people for young people’ to educate about ocean conservation in an engaging and interactive way through gaming. Considering that the average age of gamers is 34, we believe that this game can also be used by the less young. It could be the subject of a challenge between parents and children, where everyone wins because they learn by playing”
