The ocean looks blue mainly because of the way water interacts with sunlight. Sunlight may appear white, but it contains a spectrum of colors. When light enters the ocean, water absorbs the longer red, orange and yellow wavelengths more readily. Blue wavelengths travel farther through the water and are scattered back toward our eyes, so large and deep bodies of water often appear blue.
Is the ocean blue because it reflects the sky?
The sea can reflect the color and brightness of the sky, especially when its surface is calm, but reflection is not the main reason ocean water is blue. Water has its own optical properties. Even under an overcast sky, clean water can retain a blue or blue-green appearance because it absorbs red light more strongly than blue light.
Why does ocean color change?
Ocean color varies with depth, the angle of the sun, the seabed and the material suspended in the water. Shallow tropical water may look turquoise because light reflects from pale sand or coral. Coastal water can appear green when microscopic algae contain chlorophyll. Sediment carried by rivers may make water brown, while dissolved organic matter can give it a tea-colored tint.
Very clear open-ocean water generally looks deep blue because there are fewer particles to scatter green and yellow light. In productive areas, phytoplankton and other particles scatter more green light. Scientists use satellite measurements of ocean color to estimate chlorophyll and study changes in marine ecosystems.
Why can water look transparent in a glass?
A small amount of water does not provide enough distance for selective absorption to become obvious. In a glass, light travels only a few centimeters, so the water appears colorless. Across many meters of clear water, the cumulative absorption of red wavelengths becomes visible and blue dominates.
Ocean color and ocean health
Changes in color can be natural, but they may also indicate algal blooms, sediment runoff or pollution. Color alone cannot diagnose water quality, yet it is an important observation when combined with chemical, biological and satellite data. Understanding why the ocean is blue helps explain how light supports marine life and how scientists monitor the changing ocean.
