As part of the United Nations Decade of Marine Sciences for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO has created the “Save the Wave App Challenge” project to introduce Ocean Literacy, within schools, also thanks to coding and new technologies. In 2022, the challenge involved students from three institutes (ITC Nitti Napoli, Liceo Scientifico Statale Alessandro Volta in Turin and Liceo Classico Statale Bartolomeo Zucchi in Monza), in the creation of a video game that would increase awareness of the health of the ocean.

The winning web game is Ocean Savior, from the ITC Nitti school in Naples, which features the turtle Cleany. The turtle has the task of removing as much waste as possible from the sea with its basket: the player must therefore help it to preserve marine fauna and flora, eliminating all harmful elements. However, you must be careful not to drop the waste on the seabed and not to catch the little fish, otherwise you will lose one of the three lives available. To enrich the games, there are also many curiosities that allow players to learn more about the ocean and its inhabitants.
