Those two numbers describe very different parts of a seafloor that includes shallow continental shelves, broad plains, underwater mountains and narrow trenches.<\/p>\n<p>Depth matters because it controls pressure, light, temperature and the kinds of life that can survive. It also shapes currents and determines how scientists map hazards, habitats and geological features.
